The Three Sisters
Project Context
The Three Sisters involved the transformation of an early-1900s townhouse formed by joining two separate residences. The brief sought greater openness, functionality and natural light while retaining the character of the original dwelling.
A new two-level rear extension was designed as a deliberately contemporary addition, using expansive glazing, dark cladding and warm metallic finishes to establish a clear distinction between old and new.
Why UniCoteยฎ Brushed Copper Was Selected
UniCoteยฎ Brushed Copper was specified to introduce warmth and material variation within the contemporary faรงade palette.
Part of the refreshed UniCoteยฎ LUX Signature Range, the patterned pre-painted steel finish provides a copper-inspired appearance with subtle tonal variation across the surface. This allowed the material to contrast with the darker adjoining elements while contributing greater visual depth than a conventional solid colour.
Performance Advantages
Using patterned pre-painted steel enabled the design team to achieve a distinctive metallic architectural expression within a steel cladding system.
The consistency of the manufactured finish also supports its use across detailed faรงade applications where maintaining a cohesive material appearance is important to the overall composition.
Colour/Finish & Architectural Outcome
Brushed Copper introduces warm metallic tones that respond to changes in natural light and viewing angle, creating subtle shifts in the appearance of the faรงade throughout the day.
The finish helps articulate the new extension without attempting to replicate the heritage architecture. Set behind the original residence, the contemporary material palette allows the historic faรงade and roofline to retain their prominence while clearly defining the new intervention.
Summary
The Three Sisters demonstrates how material contrast can help distinguish contemporary architecture within a heritage setting. UniCoteยฎ Brushed Copper provides warmth, depth and surface character, supporting an addition that is intentionally modern while remaining thoughtfully connected to the original residence.
Brushed Copper is best assessed via a physical sample under project lighting conditions.
Brushed Copper combines a warm reddish-brown tone with fine vertical graining that reflects light in subtle variations, adding depth and richness to the surface. Part of the UniCote Signature Range, this pre-painted patterned steel finish brings a refined copper aesthetic to both contemporary and more traditional architectural roofing and cladding.
